Sketching Jazz - Creative Listening

Earlier this month, my husband Tim and I caught a Charles Mingus Jazz Band performance at the Walton Arts Center. I can be challenged at times with processing auditorily.

This time I brought along my sketch pad. I love watching music move through a musician's whole body. Watching the musician intently and moving my pencil to the music, I have more appreciation as I listen.

The concert hall seating area was dark while the stage was well lit, and luckily I was up close with a good view. During intermission, the person sitting next to me expressed her surprise that I could draw in the dark. I hadn't really thought about it. I was listening and scribbling without really looking at my page.
